We were commissioned to complete a feasibility study for a large first-floor extension to an existing detached property on Ackerman Street in Eaton Socon.
The existing property is a 1960s house with a mixture of red brick detailing and banding coupled with a white roughcast render. The house has a hipped roof which reduces the scale on all elevations of the property. In the 1980s the house was extended on two sides to form a connected garage and large kitchen area. In completing this extension it has led to some of the internal spaces becoming redundant and unusable.
The aim of the project is to refurbish and alter the ground floor in order to create a large open plan entertaining space that includes the kitchen, dining and seating area. The goal is to form a welcoming space as you enter into the property while retaining some of the key characteristics of the house.
The ground floor works were completed on-site by June 2017. The main building work and alterations to the property were completed by Joseph Construction. The structural alterations took into account the future works to ensure no issues in phasing the project. We also designed bespoke joinery items for the house that included two secret doors – one to close off the hall and rear entertainment space, the other to hide the utility room and the WC. The joinery was completed by ‘The Joinery’ – Sean O’Callaghan, Bedford.
